Past Events (Fall 2010 - Winter 2011)
March 2011
Our next meeting will be Friday, March 18 from 3-4 pm in 438 West Hall.
Agenda: (1) Introduction of new officers (2) Talk by Jing Wang, PhD candidate in statistics (http://sitemaker.umich.edu/jingjw/home) Title: Modeling choice interdependence in a social network Understanding factors that can influence consumer behavior is of great importance for companies to develop new products and effective marketing strategies. Recently with the success of social media (e.g., facebook, twitter), advertising on these web sites becomes popular. Yet the role of social network in affecting consumers’ preferences is not well understood. We conducted a field experiment mimicking how interactive ads work on facebook. We applied a discrete-time Markov chain model to analyze the data. The findings suggest that consumers rely on choices of others both at the micro (i.e., closely connected friends) and macro (i.e., a reference group) levels. (3) Vote on the Statistics department T-shirt designs (Please submit your designs to me! I haven't received any as of yet...)
Meeting Agenda:
(1) Graduate student speaker
(2) Update on organization status, website
(3) Vote for the Statistics department T-shirt design
(4) Vote in officers for the 2011-2012 academic year
*** Nominations are being accepted now ***

If you are interested in getting this organization up and running please stop by. RSVP is helpful but not required. Hope to see you this Wednesday! The Department of Statistics has a student organization MUgSS (Michigan Undergraduate Students of Statistics) which has been inactive for the past year. A couple of Statistics minors have expressed an interest in joining the organization, however, so we are looking for Statistics majors who may be interested in revitalizing MUgSS.
Other departments at the University of Michigan have active student organizations in which students plan and implement a range of projects and activities including career talks, special projects, professional development workshops, social activities, etc. Joining and participating in academically oriented student organizations is great for professional development and networking, and it is also a great resume builder for graduate school or job searching.
