CONSTITUTION FOR MICHIGAN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF STATISTICS (MUgSS) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGANArticle I - Name of Organization The name of this organization shall be the Michigan Undergraduate Students of Statistics or MUgSS. Article II - Purpose of Organization MUgSS’ purpose is to provide a forum for statistics students to exchange information, apply knowledge, and generate interest in statistical topics. Article III - Membership Section 1. Any student, staff, or faculty member of the University of Michigan with an interest in MUgSS is eligible for membership. MUgSS does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, nationality, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, marital status, political affiliation, or veteran status. Members will not discriminate against others on these bases. Section 2. To become a member, one must attend any meeting or express an interest to an officer and pay the dues set by the organization at the beginning of the term. Members may join at any time throughout the year. Meetings are open to any student, staff, or faculty member, but only active members in good academic standing can apply for executive office. Active members are identified as anyone who has paid their dues for that academic term and attended all but one meeting per term. Section 3. A member may voluntarily withdraw from the club at any time by notifying an officer in writing. Dues will not be refunded. Article IV - Officers There will be six officers in this organization: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Chair, Webmaster. The Executive board of the organization is comprised of all recognized officers. The Executive board shall meet in addition to regular organization meetings. The Executive board shall appoint committees if they are needed to carry out organization goals. President The duties of the President shall be to:

Article V - Elections Section 1. Elections are held once per year, one month prior to the conclusion of the winter academic term. Nominations will precede elections by two weeks. Section 2. Any member in good academic standing who has been active for one or more terms is eligible for office. Members are eligible to run for multiple offices, but only one office may be held by each active member at any time. Section 3. Election of officers will require a majority vote from the general membership. If a candidate fails to receive a majority of votes, a run-off election will be held within the top two candidates who received the most votes. The term of office will be one full year, beginning at the end of the winter term. Section 4. Officers will assume their positions at the end of the winter term. At least one transition meeting will be held where all previous and new executive board members must be present. Article VI – Meetings The organization shall hold regular meetings at least once per month during the academic term except when holidays, examination periods or other events make meetings impractical. A meeting schedule will be determined in the beginning of each semester by the Executive board after considering the preferences of the general membership. Attendance at organization meetings is expected. Members must notify the secretary of any absences. Meetings will be held according to Robert's Rules of Order. Article VII – Finances Every member, including Executive board members, must pay the due in full each term to be considered an active member. Dues are set by the Executive board at the beginning of each term and are approved by a simple majority at the first meeting. Dues must be paid to the treasurer before the middle of each term. Article VIII – Amendments Should any active members of MUgSS contest any section of the constitution, they must construct a written proposal and have the full support of at least one other active member and one executive board member. Said amendments will be voted on at a subsequent meeting. In order to adopt the amendment, a vote of 75% of the general membership is required. Article IX – Removal of Membership Section 1. Officers shall be removed from office if they are no longer a student in good academic standing, fail to attend two consecutive club meetings without prior notification, fail to comply with the rules and regulations put forth by the University of by this constitution, or following a criminal offense. Officers may be removed from office by 50% vote of the other officers and 75% vote of the general membership if their actions are deemed inappropriate. Officers are permitted to speak before the Executive board and the general membership about the charges made concerning their performance. Officers are not permitted to participate in the deliberation of the Executive board regarding these charges. Section 2. Members shall be removed from the organization following a failure to comply with the rules and regulations put forth by the University or by this constitution or following a criminal offense. Article X. Registration Renewal The Vice President of the executive board must renew the MSA registration for the organization for each academic year. Registration begins May 1 and should be completed prior to August 1. Names, uniqnames, phone numbers, and UMIDs for ten members (including officers) are needed. New officers will be added as authorized signers for the club’s SOAS account. The registration is to be completed at www.studentorgs.umich.edu or with the Office of Student Activities and Leadership. Article XI. Statement of Compliance MUgSS has read and fully complies with the policies set forth by the University of Michigan. |
